Preventing Tooth Decay
Today we want to talk about a sore subject: tooth decay! This is something that touches the majority of Americans at some point in life, and might not ever be too big of a deal if detected and treated early on. Still, it can cause real problems for you if left unattended. Think root canals and extractions!
And most folks don’t notice anything in the early stages of tooth decay, so they don’t even realize that they are at risk for future pain and expense.
This just illustrates the importance of scheduling your regular checkups at our Houston-area office. When you are here, every six months or so, we’ll have a chance to deeply clean your teeth and closely examine your mouth for the telltale signs of cavities.
Plus, we’ll be able to add extra layers of protection with our dental sealants and fluoride treatments. But more on that in a minute!
Here’s the deal: as bacteria gathers on your teeth, it forms a clingy film known as plaque. And the dangerous bacteria in plaque feeds on sugar from your food and changes it into acid that corrodes your tooth enamel and causes decay.
Once that bacteria slips below your gum-line, in addition to cavities, you could also be face to face with gingivitis and periodontal disease, two forms of gum disease that have nasty consequences for your mouth and possibly your overall health.
But you can fight back! And we are here to be your ally in this battle for the health of your smile. You’ll be happy to know that we have a good strategy that involves cleanings, sealants and fluoride!
Bacteria often attacks the natural grooves of your chewing surfaces. That’s because it is difficult for you to clean these parts of your teeth thoroughly. Accordingly, when we place sealants on these areas, it guards against the bacteria-producing acid that is waiting to erode your teeth.
Before placing dental sealants, we will clean your teeth with a rotating brush. After drying your teeth, one of our preventive dentists will prepare your teeth with a solution so that the sealant will stick. Next, we will dry your teeth again and place the sealant on the teeth. Depending on the type of sealant we use, we harden it with either a special light or some other method. After that, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of extra protection!
Besides cleanings and sealants, simply adding some fluoride to your daily routine is effective at stopping this process in its tracks. Fluoride actually forms its own protective film on your teeth. This film thwarts the bacteria’s ability to stick together, which makes it nearly impossible for plaque to gain a foothold on your teeth.
Beyond that, fluoride can even inhibit the conversion of sugar into acid, buying you some more time to fight off the bacteria. Also, it aids in a process known as remineralization, wherein your body uses calcium to replace the minerals lost from the early stages of tooth decay.
If you have a higher propensity for falling prey to decay, we will likely suggest special toothpastes, mouth rinses and brushes along with more frequent cleaning appointments.
We also offer fluoride treatments that are quick, in-office affairs in which we apply a concentrated fluoride solution onto your teeth. This painless procedure will harden your enamel and reduce your risk of gum disease.
