What is gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue caused by a buildup of bacteria and plaque in the mouth. It affects about 80 percent of Americans at some point in their lives. If left unchecked, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and jaw bone deterioration. It is also linked to total body problems like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Gum disease can wreak chaos in the mouth and possibly throughout the body if left untreated.

What are the common symptoms of gum disease?

In the early stages, gum disease may not exhibit any symptoms at all. This means that it is often undetectable at home and must be diagnosed by a dental health care professional. However, as the disease progress, it often does exhibit some signs that are easily noticeable. Some common signs of advanced gum disease includes:

  • red gums
  • swollen gums
  • tender gums
  • bleeding gums
  • chronic bad breath
  • loose teeth
  • teeth that have shifted out of place
  • gums that are pulling away from teeth

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact our office right away. We can help you get the care you need to restore your good oral health.

How can my gum disease be treated?

If you are diagnosed with gum disease, we offer a few different procedures to help restore your health. Sometimes, a routine dental cleaning is all that is needed to treat very mild cases of gum disease. If that is not enough, we recommend either deep cleaning or gum surgery. Regardless of your situation, we can get you the help you need.

Deep cleaning. This procedure, also known as scaling and root planing, is designed to remove all of the bacteria and buildup from underneath your gums. We can use this method to eliminate moderate infections and restore oral health. To determine if our scaling and root planing procedures are right for you, please talk to a member of our team.

Gum surgery. If deep cleaning isn’t enough, we may recommend surgery. Our surgical procedure is safe and designed to effectively clean out periodontal pockets and reattach the gums to the teeth. Our skilled periodontist will make sure you are properly taken care of — we even offer dental sedation to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the treatment. Again, talk to our team to find out if this is the right procedure for you.

How can I prevent gum disease?

Preventing gum disease is simple. Follow these four steps to avoid all major instances of gum disease and to maintain a happy, healthy smile.

  1. Brush at least twice per day. Use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles.
  2. Floss in between each and every one of your teeth at least once per day.
  3. Avoid sugary snacks. If you indulge, brush immediately afterward.
  4. Maintain a regular routine of dental visits. We recommend coming in for a cleaning and exam once every six months.

By following this simple advice, you will be able to keep your smile healthy for many years to come. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
