Mouth pain is a symptom of several dental problems. Depending on the oral health issue to blame, pain may appear in the gums, teeth, or jaws. In some cases, this pain can also point to an emergency, and the need to see our Houston emergency dentist. Here is a look at some common causes of different types of oral pain.
Pain in the Gums
When the gums hurt, the problem may be gum disease or an abscess. Gum disease ranges in severity from gingivitis, the early form of the condition, to periodontitis, the advanced form. Gingivitis is associated with tender, swollen gums that hurt when brushed or flossed. Periodontitis may cause pain during chewing or speaking. Abscesses can result from long-term gum disease or from tooth infections, which can spread to the gums and other nearby soft tissues.
Pain in the Teeth
Painful teeth are another common reason for mouth pain. Although longstanding cavities often cause this pain, the teeth can also become uncomfortable from other types of enamel loss. Untreated tooth decay can reveal the highly sensitive dentin, which lies beneath the enamel layer. Tooth infections may result if bacteria enter the pulp in the center of the tooth, causing throbbing pain that can quickly worsen without treatment. Tooth erosion, whether from tooth grinding, acidic foods, or over-whitening, can make the teeth painfully sensitive to cold, hot, sweet, and sour foods and drinks.
Pain in the Jaw
Jaw pain is frequently caused by TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, but can also happen after severe gum disease. TMJ affects the joints connecting the lower jaw to the skull, and Houston patients with the condition may experience pain in surrounding areas, including mouth pain. Extensive gum disease can involve damage to soft tissues and the bone surrounding the teeth.
Mouth pain means that something is wrong in the mouth, and the problem could be serious. An emergency check-up should be scheduled to determine what is going on and what can be done to treat it.
