Prevent Cavities with Dental Sealants

Tooth decay and gum disease are the two most common oral problems for Americans. They affect about fifty perfect of children and the vast majority of adults (about ninety percent). Tooth decay and gum disease tend to be silent disorders. That is, you may note even realize you are suffering from them until they are in advanced state.

If left intreated, gum disease and tooth decay can lead to painful toothaches and even the loss of teeth. Even rigorous brushing and flossing habits are not enough to complete prevent tooth decay and gum disease. That’s where preventative dentistry comes in.

At the Antoine Dental Center in Houston, TX, we offer an array of preventative dental services. In addition to regular six month dental cleanings, these options are among the best ways to avoid cavities and decay. In today’s post of our dental health blog, we’re going to tell you a little more about two of most common decay prevention methods: dental sealants and fluoride treatments.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are among the most common of dental treatments. They are designed to help prevent the development of cavities. Generally speaking, sealants can be placed over pits and grooves in your back teeth. These sealants help prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar, by preventing bacteria growth. Dental sealants can help prevent the need for restorative dental work – such as fillings, dental crowns, or root canals – in the long-term.

Oral bacteria is often attracted to the natural groove’s of your back teeth’s chewing surfaces. Because your back teeth are more difficult to reach when brushing and flossing, they tend to be more prone to development of cavities and other forms of tooth decay. Sealants help prevent this bacteria from eroding your teeth.

Placing dental sealants is a quick and painless process. We start by performing a thorough cleaning of your teeth. Your teeth are then exposed to a solution which will help the sealant stick into place. The sealants is then applied to your teeth; we hardest the sealant into place using a special light or other method.

Many of our patients can benefit from the application of dental sealants. For our younger patients, they are useful for protecting permanent teeth that are just starting to erupt from the gumline. They can also be useful for adults who are at a heighten risk for tooth decay due to genetics or lifestyle factors (such as smoking).

Dental sealants may last for a few years before they need to be replaced. Certain dietary habits may influence how long your sealant is effective for. For instance, if you drink a lot of soda, the sealant may need to be replaced more quickly. During your routine dental exams we can determine if and when your sealant needs to be replaced.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments are another excellent option for patients prone to tooth decay or gum disease. Fluoride treatments are generally performed at the conclusion of a dental cleaning. Fluoride is a safe, natural mineral. Fluoride has been trusted for decades as a way to strengthen the enamel of your teeth, and prevent tooth decay.

Fluoride is commonly found in public supplies of water, and is a key ingredient for most most anti-cavity toothpastes. During a fluoride treatment we apply a concentrated amount of fluoride to your teeth. This process is completely painless and only takes a few minutes. You will benefit from a reduced risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
