Your First Dentist Appointment in Years | Houston, TX

Greetings Houston! Welcome back to the ongoing dental health blog of the Antoine Dental Center. Recently, we had a gentleman come into our office for the first-time. He was nervous because it had been many years since he visited the dentist. He simply didn’t know what to expect.

In today’s post, we want to describe what happens at a routine dental appointment. We also want you to know that you’re welcome at our comfortable and modern office in Houston, TX, even if it’s been years since you visited the dentist, or if you’ve never visited a dentist before. Many people fear being lectured by the dentist; we won’t do that, we’re just glad you decided to come in!

Routine dental appointments play an extremely large role in protecting the health of your teeth. Even if you brush and floss everyday, it’s impossible to avoid all tooth decay without a little professional help. Plaque and dental tartar often reside in places in your mouth that you simply can’t reach on your own!

During a routine dental appointment, we will clean your teeth and examine them. For your convenience, we can perform a teeth cleaning and dental exam in the same visit. The American Dental Association recommends having your teeth cleaned and examined every six months. But even if it’s been much longer than that since your last appointment, it’s never too late to start taking care of your smile.

During a routine dental appointment, we’ll begin by taking x-rays of your teeth. We use state-of-the-art digital x-rays to avoid exposing you to potentially harmful radiation. This amazing technology takes only a few seconds to show an extremely clear picture of your teeth. Once we’ve taken digital x-rays, we can begin to accurately plan treatment for your oral health.

A dental hygienist will then clean your teeth. During this pain-free process, we’ll use several ultrasonic tools to give your teeth a dental deep cleaning. We use ultrasonic cleaners to loosen deposits of dental tartar, then use a water sprayer to clean them. Afterwards, we will use a hand scraper to remove tartar and plaque build-ups from your teeth. Following your teeth cleaning, you’ll have shiny and smooth teeth.

If your teeth are displaying an early signs of gingivitis, we may smooth the roots of your teeth to reverse the process of this disease. We then scrub and polish your teeth with a specialized electric toothbrush and gritty polish. This allows use to remove many outer stains and discolorations from your teeth. We may recommend teeth whitening if your teeth are deeply discolored. Following your teeth cleaning, we may use a fluoride treatment to reduce your risk for tooth decay.

Your initial dental appointment will give a deep understanding of your oral health. If your teeth are healthy, we’ll recommend scheduling another teeth cleaning in six months. But if there are problematic areas of your oral health, we will consult you with our recommendations for treatment.

If you have a minor cavity, we may need to fill it with a tooth-colored filling. For larger cavities, we may recommend restoring the tooth with a porcelain crown. If an infection is present in a tooth, you may need to undergo a pain-free root canal. If there is a risk of the infection spreading, we may recommend having the tooth painlessly extracted. If you are missing teeth, we will tell you about how you can fill gaps in your smile with dental implants or bridges.

If you need to undergo one of these essential treatments, we will begin planning your care. We may use our 3D CAT scanner to get a closer look at your oral health. At the Antoine Dental Center in Houston, TX, our state-of-the-art technology allows to take all the guesswork out of planning your dental treatment.

We also pride ourselves on being an extremely patient-friendly practice.
