DENTAL SEALANTS IN HOUSTON, TX

Dental Sealants in Houston

At Antoine Dental Center in Houston, we believe prevention is the best dental treatment our patients can receive, which is why we are proud to offer dental sealants for children and adults. Dental sealants are a mainstay of preventive dentistry that can help prevent cavities in treated teeth. In many cases, dental sealants are placed over pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of molars, where plaque and tartar are more likely to collect and foster the growth of bacteria. By supporting optimal oral health and averting problems before they have the chance to form, this treatment at our dental clinic in Houston can save our patients time and money in the long term.

What are sealants?

In cavity-prone teeth, bacteria often attack the natural grooves on the chewing surfaces because of difficulty cleaning them thoroughly. Sealants are special applications which help protect against cavities by filling in tiny cracks and holes on the exterior of the teeth. The placement of sealant on these areas does not necessarily prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar, but it does guard against erosion by the acid that oral bacteria produce there. Sealants are especially beneficial for children ages 6 to 12, though adults can also benefit from receiving sealants. Sealants last for about 2-4 years before they need replacements.

Do I need dental sealants?

Even if you dont have a cavity or a small crack on your teeth, you can still benefit from sealants as they act as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids.

How can I get dental sealants?

Before placing dental sealants, your dentist at Antoine Dental cleans the teeth thoroughly with a rotating brush. After drying the target teeth, your dentist prepares those teeth with a solution so that the sealant will stick. Next, the teeth are dried again to make way for the sealant. Finally, your dentist places the sealant on the teeth and hardens it with a special light or other method depending on the type of sealant being used.

How long do dental sealants last?

Dental sealants can last for several years depending on your oral habits and exposure to acidic or hard foods. During routine exams, your dentist can check sealed teeth to determine whether re-application is warranted.

Are dental sealants permanent?

Dental sealants are not permanent. The NIDCR estimates that sealants can last up to 10 years with proper care. Sealants gradually wear away over time so you don’t have to worry about visiting the dentist to get them removed.

Can adults get teeth sealants?

The most common candidates for sealants are kids and teenagers because of the likelihood of developing decay in the depressions and grooves of the pre-molars and molars. However, adults can also benefit from sealants to avoid the risk of decay/cavities.
