What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are prostheses that replace a tooth from root to crown. Implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone for maximum strength and stability. After these posts naturally integrate into the jawbone, they’re topped with a natural-looking porcelain crown, dental bridge, or even a set of dentures

There are three main parts of an implant:

  1. The Implant: The titanium post that serves as the new tooth root and is permanently placed into the jawbone.
  2. The Abutment: A connector that supports or holds a tooth or multiple teeth.
  3. The Restoration: This is the visible part, and is typically a dental crown.

Our Dental Implant Treatments

We understand that every individual has different oral health needs. That’s why we provide multiple dental implant treatments.

Hybrid Implants

Hybrid implants, or hybrid dentures, are an excellent choice for patients missing an entire arch of teeth. A set number of implants are anchored into the jawbone and then a custom set of dentures is attached on top, providing patients with a natural appearance and a fully functional smile.

All-On-4

All-on-4 replaces an entire arch of missing teeth by placing four implants into the jawbone. From there, a custom restoration is attached to the implant posts, giving patients a complete and healthy smile.

All-On-6

All-on-6 uses six dental implant posts to sustain an entire arch of prosthetic teeth. Patients can achieve a permanent restoration with a natural feel and function.

All-On-X

All-on-X, or Teeth in a Day, is a full arch tooth replacement option that allows patients to achieve a complete smile in just one day. Four or more dental implants are used to secure the prosthetic.

Benefits of Dental Implants

We understand how hard it may be to find a tooth replacement that works for you. However, dental implants have become the number one choice for the following benefits they provide patients:

  • Prevents bone loss
  • Looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth
  • Safe for adjacent teeth
  • Comfortable
  • Stable with no slipping or sliding
  • Low maintenance
  • Can last a lifetime with proper care

Dental Implant Candidacy

Most individuals missing one or more teeth are candidates for dental implants. At your initial consultation with our Houston dentists, they’ll evaluate your oral health to determine if dental implants may be right for you. When evaluating our patients for dental implant candidacy, we look for the following:

  • Healthy gums
  • Adequate jawbone density
  • In good overall health
  • Committed to long-term dental hygiene

To see if dental implants are right for you, call our Houston dental office at (713) 691-8880 to schedule your consultation.

The Dental Implant Process

The entire dental implant process will typically require multiple visits to our Houston office. Each patient begins with an initial consultation with one of our dentists, where they’ll discuss your smile goals, evaluate your oral health, and determine if dental implants are the best treatment option. Once implants are agreed upon, we’ll schedule the simple implant procedure.

Before your procedure begins, we’ll provide patients with sedation dentistry to ensure a comfortable and pain-free treatment. Your dentist will first create a small cut into the gums. With the help of various dental tools, we’ll insert the implant post into your jawbone and stitch the incision closed. You’ll be sent home to heal and allow the implant to naturally integrate before returning for a final appointment.

After three to six months of healing, you’ll return to our Houston dental office again. We’ll place your custom restoration of choice and you’ll have achieved a brand-new, beautiful smile. The entire process may differ depending on what dental implant treatment you’ve chosen.

The Costs of Dental Implant Treatment

The cost of your dental implant treatment will vary based on certain factors. Factors including the type of implant used, the number of implants needed, and the location of the implant procedure will play a role in determining the total cost.

In many cases, a portion of the costs of dental implants is covered by insurance. Often insurance providers will cover some or all of the dental implant procedure if it’s required due to an accident or injury causing the missing tooth. If you’re unsure what your insurance coverage looks like, we may be able to help you find out. Give our Houston office a call at (713) 691-8880.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants can last a lifetime. However, the restoration that sits atop your implant typically lasts between 10 and 15 years before needing to be replaced. To increase the longevity of your restoration, it’s recommended that you maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine and visit your dentist twice a year for dental cleanings and exams.
Are dental implants painful?
No, receiving dental implants isn’t a painful process as it’s performed with the use of sedation dentistry. It’s common for patients to feel some slight discomfort after the procedure. Any pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications and cold compresses.
Are there different types of implants?
Yes, there are two different types of dental implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are placed in the jawbone itself, while subperiosteal implants are placed under the gums but above the bone. Subperiosteal implants are typically used for patients with less jawbone.
Will smoking impact my dental implants?
Yes, smoking can negatively impact your dental implants. The failure rate for implants of those who smoke is 4x higher than the failure rate for those who don’t. If you decide to undergo dental implant treatment, it’s advised to quit smoking or chewing tobacco completely.
Do dental implants require special care?
One of the most convenient benefits of dental implants is that they don’t require any special oral care. As long as you’re brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist twice a year for dental cleanings and exams, your implants should remain in excellent condition.
